Skateboarding Injury Risks
ReplyDeleteSkateboarding, a popular recreational activity and now an Olympic sport, has a high incidence of injuries due to the hard surfaces involved and the dynamic nature of the activity [1] [2] [3]. Approximately 70,000 injuries requiring emergency department visits occur annually in the U.S. [2] [4]. Fractures are the most common type of injury, accounting for 44% of all skateboarding-related injuries in one large study [5]. While upper limb fractures (wrists and hands) are most prevalent due to falls on outstretched arms, lower limb injuries are also common, with ankle injuries accounting for 45% of lower limb injuries [1] [5]. Broken legs, specifically, can occur from falls, impacts, or failed tricks, especially given the forces involved and the unforgiving surfaces [4] [6].
Other common skateboarding injuries include:
Scrapes and abrasions [1].
Sprains and strains, particularly to the ankles [1] [2].
Concussions and other head injuries, which can be severe and lead to long-term disability or even death, especially if a helmet is not worn [1] [2] [3] [4] [6] [7] [8]. Head injuries account for about 20% of all skateboarding injuries, with serious head injuries (concussion, skull fracture, blunt trauma) representing 3.1% [6].
Facial injuries, such as broken noses or jawbones [2] [4].
Factors increasing the risk of injury in skateboarding include:
Inexperience: A significant portion of injuries (approximately one-third) occur in individuals with less than one week of experience [3] [6].
Lack of protective gear: Not wearing helmets, wrist guards, knee pads, and elbow pads significantly increases the risk and severity of injuries [2] [3] [4] [6] [9].
Unsafe environments: Skateboarding on irregular surfaces, near traffic, or in crowded areas increases the risk of falls and collisions [2] [3] [4].
Attempting tricks beyond skill level [3] [4].
Age: Children under 5 should not skateboard, and those aged 6-10 require close supervision due to their higher center of gravity, slower reaction times, and tendency to overestimate their abilities [2] [3] [4]. The risk of traumatic brain injury increases with age, with skateboarders aged 10-16 having a 50% higher risk than those under 10 [9].
Rugby Injury Risks
Rugby is a high-impact, contact sport with a significant risk of injury, despite minimal safety gear compared to sports like American football [10] [11]. While broken legs can occur, they are not as frequently cited as the primary concern in rugby injury statistics as they are in skateboarding. Instead, rugby commonly sees:
